Yes the leaves on the trees are sizzling flickers of flame, blown embers in the breeze. Yes the robin pours the cream of its song steadily, unhurriedly, across the air. But everything recedes before the glory that is the geektasticness of Rachel’s Cool Socks:
For the mathematically inclined, here’s a bit more detail on the heel pattern. It is a partial surface of revolution, made from a cubic function rotated π radians around an axis. The increase decrease pattern was generated using Mathematica with code adapted from a snippet written by Jim Conant from an algorithm of Amy Szczepa´nski.
I’m not ashamed to admit that reading these words evoked a flushing frisson of delight. (Tautological* I know, since this was a warm tingle rather than a cold shiver but is there a single word to describe the sensation? Answers on a postcard please to the usual address.)
Having suffered from knitter’s block over the summer I’m now beset by an almost equally debilitating attack of knitter’s glut-greed-overcommitment guilt. But I shall not repine. To the needles!
